Police: Boy, 6, killed in hit-and-run on Detroit's west side

Police said a six-year-old boy was killed by a hit-and-run driver Friday near the Detroit-Dearborn border.

"The little shoes in the road.  It hurts, but we're going to get justice," Officer Scott Sheets with the Detroit Police Department's Fatal Squad.

"When you leave the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, especially when a six-year-old child is killed, that brings it up to the next level," Sheets said.

We're told Mohammad Bah was hit by a car on Schaefer near Tireman on the city's west side right in front of his home.

Detroit police said the person behind the wheel did something only a coward could live with doing.

"He exited to look to see what he had done.  Once he observed that, he re-entered his vehicle, then fled north of Schaefer," Sheets said.

The suspect's vehicle is said to be a van with damage to the front driver's side.

As for the driver, Sheets described him as a "black male in his forties with a cast on his arm driving a yellow Checker cab van."

"We need to locate this person to find out exactly what happened and why he left the location."

"The child was struck first by the yellow Checker cab van, and then southbound traffic was coming and he was struck by a white sedan causing more damage to the victim."

Police said there was no way that person could have prevented what happened, but he did the right thing.

"He immediately stopped and called for help," Sheets said.
