PHOENIX -

A 41-year-old mother died and her two sons were injured after a truck ran them over while they were walking near 12th Street and Northern Avenue on Sunday.

It was a tragic end to what was supposed to be a happy Mother's Day.

Phoenix police say a mother and two sons, ages 3 and 8, were crossing the street mid-block when a driver in a lifted truck made a left hand turn and crashed into them.

The mother, 41-year-old Ahlam Awad, was declared dead on scene. The 3-year-old sustained non life-threatening injuries and will be ok. The 8-year-old sustained only minor injury.

Phoenix Police spokesperson Lt. Greg Berghorst says the driver of the truck claims she didn't see the mother or her son.

"She's looking at traffic, makes a left hand turn into the center turn lane, does not see the pedestrians, hears a thud, feels the bump and immediately notices the pedestrians were in the roadway. She immediately stops. She is here on scene, quite distraught," said Berghorst.

Officers say the driver didn't appear to be impaired.

It's unclear if any charges will be filed.
