DNA testing done in connection to the John Wayne Gacy serial killer case has led to the identification of remains found 13 years ago as belonging to a New Jersey orphan who vanished in 1972, officials said.

The remains have been identified as Steven Soden, 16. He was not one of Gacy's victims, officials said.

Soden, then 16, and his sister lived at an orphanage in Paterson in the 1970s.

In April 1972, Soden, his sister, and a 12-year-old friend named Donald Caldwell were part of an orphanage group that went camping in Bass River State Forest.

Soden and Caldwell vanished on the night of April 3 and were never seen again.

In 2012, believing her brother was one of Gacy's unidentified victims, Soden's sister submitted her DNA to investigators in Illinois.

Although her DNA was not a match in the Gacy case, it pointed to the bones that an off-duty New Jersey state trooper found in Bass River way back in April 2000.

At the time of the discovery of the bones, detectives investigated but could not identify the remains, which were then sent State Police Forensic Anthropology Lab.

State Police detectives are now trying to figure out what happened to Caldwell.
