Superstorm Sandy

Subway to resume service to Rockaways

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The MTA and Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the A train subway will run its route all the way to the Rockaways starting May 30, seven months after Superstorm Sandy washed away the track support bed, leaving tracks hanging in midair. Crews rebuilt the entire bed.

"Superstorm Sandy devastated the entire MTA network like no other storm, but the MTA did a remarkable job of restoring service following the storm and at the end of this month, the A line in the Rockaways will be up and running," Cuomo said. "The last six months have meant substantial cleanup and repair, leading to the rapid restoration of full service in all but the hardest-hit facilities."

Crews rebuilt 1,500 feet of washed-out tracks, replaced miles of signal, power and communications wires, and rehabilitate two stations that were completely flooded.

Also, the $600 million South Ferry station, 30 feet below ground level, was flooded during the storm and is still not fully repaired. But its entrance and the old South Ferry station, 25 feet higher up, became operational again April 3.

The MTA displayed some of the damaged equipment. One MTA worker said this was the worst he had seen in his 30 years of repairing stations.

Hurricane season begins June 1. The MTA said that if another Sandy hits New York City it will have to depend on old method -- sandbags and plywood -- to cover the 540 entrances for the subway system in Lower Manhattan.

MTA officials told reporters the plywood and and bags worked, but not completely. He showed new possible covers for subway entrances, including foam-covered roll-out screens for when the next big hurricane system hits. These are possibilities for 2014 being checked now.

The MTA has set up a Sandy Recovery and Resiliency Division to manage rebuilding from Sandy, which will require years of construction and oversight of billions of dollars in federal aid.
