Hate crime murder in Greenwich Village

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police arrested a man they say shot and killed a gay man after shouting homophobic slurs at him in Greenwich Village early Saturday morning.

According to authorities, Marc Carson, 32, was shot at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street.

Police arrested 33-year-old Elliot Morales from the Lower East Side.

"This clearly appears to be a hate crime – a bias crime," said NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Carson, from Harlem, died at Beth Israel Hospital.

Kelly says before the shooting, the Morales urinated outside Annisa bar on Barrow and West Fourth Streets. He flashed a gun to a manager, and made anti-gay remarks, according to Kelly.

After that incident, it's believed the Morales and his two friends confronted Carson and his companion as they walked up Sixth Avenue.

"He said to the two individuals walking north – ‘Look at these two fa-s. What are you gay wrestlers?'" said Commissioner Kelly.

The men, who had no connection to the suspect, tried to move on and didn't realize they'd been followed.

"The shooter says to the victims, 'Do you want to die here?' The suspect takes out a silver revolver and shoots the victim once in the cheek," said Kelly.

The Morales was arrested five blocks away.

"This is extremely shocking and we're taking this extremely seriously," said Eugene Lovendusky of Queer Rising.

Lovendusky, a gay rights activist, says the shooting is the most violent in a series of crimes against homosexuals in the city recently -- noting the number of bias attacks is up by 13 percent this year compared to last year.

"A lot of queer culture is starting to seep into normative culture and that can cause confusion and turns to violence."

Police say Morales has been charged with murder as a hate crime.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
