NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Authorities say one person is dead and another was injured when the vehicle they were in ran off the road and crashed into Huntington Harbor on Long Island Saturday evening.

Police say the driver, 29-year-old Edward Franz of Huntington Station, was driving his SUV southbound on West Shore Road in Huntington, when he lost control.  The SUV struck a guardrail, went airborne, and landed upside down in Huntington Harbor around 5:30 p.m.

Four good Samaritans and four officers jumped in to try and save them.

Franz was freed from the overturned car by the officers and firefighters and went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to Huntington Hospital where he later died.

The other passenger, 20-year-old Liam O'Mara of Huntington, was taken to Huntington Hospital for observation, rescued by the good Samaritans.

The four officers and the four good Samaritans were also taken to Huntington Hospital, where they were treated and released. One of the good Samaritans broke his hand trying to break one of the windows of the car.

Suffolk County police say their investigation is continuing and that at the time of the crash, the road was wet due to rain.
