12 charged after disturbances near Michigan Avenue

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Twelve people have been charged with misdemeanor offenses after police responded to groups of teens running through traffic on North Michigan Avenue and elsewhere on the Gold Coast.

No one was hurt in what police Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti described as a "minor disturbance."

"There were kids running around, being stupid, no fighting or anything, running in and out of traffic," Officer Joshua Purkiss said.

Police said Sunday that the 10 juveniles and two young adults were charged with a range of offenses including reckless conduct, loitering, resisting police and damaging an officer's bicycle.

Authorities declined to identify the adults charged.

Officers had responded to reports of 40 or more rowdy teens running around near the Water Tower, Oak Street Beach, the intersection of Dearborn Street and Delaware Place, and Clark Street and Delaware Place.

The crowds moved as police arrived, and officers were telling teens gathered around State and Chicago later Saturday to get on the Red Line there and leave the area.
