Shooting near Old Orchard Mall in Skokie `not a random act`

SKOKIE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A shooting near Old Orchard Mall Friday night was "not a random act," Skokie police said at a village board meeting Monday.

Police are still investigating the shooting, which happened on the 4800 block of Golf Road around 9:45 p.m. Friday, Deputy Police Chief Michael Pechter told the board.

Skokie Police Chief Tony Scarpelli said Sunday that police still have no suspect in custody in connection with the shooting, though police were continuing to follow all investigative leads in the case.

The victim, a boy whose age was not released, had surgery on Saturday and was in stable condition.

As a result of the incident a small carnival, held annually at Westfield Old Orchard, had to shut down earlier than usual.

Tom Thebault, general manager of North American Midway Entertainment, which runs the 15-ride carnival on the west side of the mall in a parking lot, said he agreed to a request from mall officials and police to close two hours earlier on Saturday night and again Sunday, even though the shooting did not occur in the carnival area. He said the carnival attracted families.

"That's kind of their decision," he said of mall operators and police.

A police department source confirmed that the shooting did not take place at the carnival area, but along Golf Road, across the street from the south end of the mall.

Police ask that if anyone has any information or knowledge regarding the shooting to contact the Skokie Police Department at (847) 982-5900.
