Fallen firefighter, Brad Harper, was a newlywed, married less than 6 months.
FOX 10 talked with a group of his friends who have known Brad Harper since kindergarten.
They said he was funny, often laughed off injuries and told it like it was.
They said Sunday that it was like losing a brother. Now their focus turns to their other friend, the young wife he leaves behind.
"I was there watching my best friend die," said Jake Fenton.
Fenton was at St. Joseph's hospital throughout the night as his friend, brad harper fought for his life.
Friends hoped he'd pull through.
"Brad's a fighter...the mindset he always has, I didn't want to think anything different," said Josh Estes.
The 23-year-old Phoenix firefighter was gravely injured, when he was pinned between two vehicles at a fire Friday evening.
Friends waited while he went through surgery.
"After they scanned his brain, they didn't find any activity, kept him on life support until about 12:30ish and then took him off of it," said Fenton.
Fenton is a youth pastor at Community Church of Joy in Glendale.
He and about a dozen other of Harper's childhood friends gathered at the hospital.
"We got together and we prayed and we prayed and we prayed and there was peace beyond comprehension that God really gave us," said Fenton.
Fenton was also the best man in Harper's wedding.
Harper married his high school sweetheart in December, less than 6 months ago.
"Their wedding was just, as their best friend, was one of the best days of my life and it was so great to watch them finally get married," said Fenton.
Fenton says Harper's wife is the most resilient person he knows.
"If she is like normal Lena is, she is resilient, she is hanging in there and she is praying and she is seeking God," said Fenton. "He loved her so much, she was she really was gods gift to him
Fenton says Harper wanted to be a firefighter since high school and followed in the footsteps of his two older cousins who are also firefighters.
"It's like we lost a brother today," said Josh Estes.
"Just so broken for his wife, his parents and his brothers and all my friends. It was horrible," said Fenton.
Besides his wife, Harper also leaves behind his parents and three younger brothers.
No word yet on funeral arrangements, we'll keep you updated.
