'Bridging The Gap' Preserves The Arts In Schools With Technology

Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) I want to tell you a story of what sometimes happens in TV. The story that almost got away.

We had plans to do a story at Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School at 9:30am. A terrific story about how school choirs are working together to get the arts education that is sometimes lost to budget cuts. It's an effort of UEI (Urban Entertainment Institute) and it's CEO/Founder Fred Martin. It almost didn't happen. Just before our assignment at Emerson we were supposed to get video of Eric Garcetti voting. He was late and that threw us into the traffic tizzy that snaked between Silverlake and where we needed to go.

We got there. The kids were excited. Not just the ones at the school, but kids in Deer River, Minnesota and Chicago who were on a big screen in the room. The bringing together of these artistic kids was done with something called "telepresence" by Cisco. It was pretty nifty. Camera, sound ... all as if we were all in the same room. Well, we were. It's just two of the choirs were on the big screen. Fred Martin says with "telepresence" arts programs can be provided in the schools but many schools at one time.

The story was fun. The kids in all three cities were grateful for a chance to be on TV. We all took pictures of each other and promised to put them on Facebook. I'm glad we got there in time to do the story that almost didn't happen.

If you're interested a fundraiser for the program will be held Wednesday night at the ROXY in West, Hollywood. Here's a link with more information: www.http://urbanent.org.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
