Hundreds seek employment at Atlanta job fair

Posted: Updated:

Metro Atlanta's jobless rate fell in April from 7.9 percent to 7.6 percent. The state labor department says employers added nearly 13,000 jobs. What do those numbers mean for those still looking for work?

Hundreds of people put on their best outfit and lined up to talk with retail employers for the Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta on Thursday.

"I've been out of work for about six, seven months now, so, first thing available. And I am looking for a career," said Orlando Quick.

Many said they hope to parlay their skills into a career in retail in this sluggish economy.

"With this place opening, there's a high possibility of actually getting a job by coming here," said Bamby Budiman.

The unemployment rate drop in metro Atlanta didn't make Wendy Shaw any more confident.

"I still feel I'm a part of that 7.6 percent. I don't think I'll feel confident until I have a job," Shaw said.

But others were more optimistic.

"I've talked to several of the different companies that are here today and it does sound like there are some opportunities available," said Thomas Floyd.

Floyd says after working in marketing for 12 years and then having to work retail for the past decade, he's learned not to rely on the jobless rate.

"There are a lot of people that are getting jobs. They're just not the jobs that they really want, or even feel like they really deserve. But they just have to do something to bring bread to the table," Floyd said.

But whether you're looking to supplement your income with part-time work or looking for a new career, the outlet mall developer says they have jobs for everyone.

"I've even heard that there's a few district manager positions that they're hiring for at our job fairs. That they want them based out of the shopping center. So, there are some very good career positions that are available here," said Gina Slechta, the vice president of marketing at Horizon Group Properties

The Outlet Shoppes at Atlanta will hire 1,600 people before it opens in Woodstock on July 18.
