Rainy weather puts a damper on holiday plans and events

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New Yorkers that have visited City Island in the summer know it gets really busy, especially on Memorial Day weekend. Saturday, it was pretty much a ghost town thanks to the cold, rainy weather.

Its official -- the unofficial start of summer was a washout.

Where is the summer?

Rather than beach weather, we had cold temps, overcast skies, and high winds on this start of Memorial Day weekend. It's no wonder Orchard Beach in the Bronx was empty.

High winds, overcast skies, and cold temps made today feel more like fall.

"I just want summer here."

Angelo and his friends tried to make the most of the holiday weekend by coming out to Orchard Beach to play a little ball. Aside from the lifeguards, they were pretty much the only people there.

Normally on Memorial Day weekend, the beach, boardwalk -- you name it, is packed.

"What are you going to do? It's a wash out, got to make the best of it," said one beachgoer.

City Island just down the road was also deserted. The weather was so cold even the ice cream shop closed up early -- among other shops.

In recent years, residents tell say the streets have been so packed on Memorial Day weekend, police have had to come in and direct traffic.

"It's usually really crazy with a lot of tourist who come, a lot of traffic -- but it's been quiet with the weather the way it is," said one City Island resident.

"I'm very disappointed. We like to start the season on Memorial Day but it was just blowing too hard out of the west," added another resident.

He's not the only one disappointed. This kind of weather is bad for business in this boating town.

Just ask Gabe Devita of Filomina's Pizza and Pasta.

"It's usually pretty busy, pretty busy. You get a lot of driving, a lot of traffic, a lot of walking people – but you need the weather to be nice. Weather like this, it's slow."

Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn was also open and empty today.

Long Island's Jones Beach is not looking much different but at least it's open. Heavy rainfall forced 19 other beaches on Nassau County to be closed to bathers Saturday.

Weather also caused officials to postpone the Bethpage Air Show until Sunday.

If only Memorial Day was next weekend as apparently, temperatures are supposed to be in the 80's. Business owners on City Island say they can't wait.

Several beaches on the New Jersey and New York coastlines are open to visitors but closed to swimming because of high surf and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.

Brooklyn's final pitch to hold the 2016 Democratic national convention was centered on New York City's robust mass transit system -- and a pledge to learn "from the mistakes" from the last time the city hosted a presidential convention. The Republicans gathered in New York in 2004 to re-nominate President George W. Bush, choosing to meet in deep-blue Manhattan less than three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
