Metro Detroit war hero marks Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:
SALEM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

He's 86 years old and he's a true American hero. During World War II, Jack Apostol was the youngest combat soldier in the 70th Infantry Division. He endured 86 consecutive days of battle, but the first day on the front lines was almost his last.

Click on the video player to watch Ryan Ermanni's report. You can also watch the full interview with Jack Apostol sharing his memories of war.

More than half of Jack's division was killed in battle -- but, for whatever reason the Salem Township resident was spared.

Among his honors, Apostol was awarded a Bronze Star.  On this Memorial Day, Jack hopes we all enjoy a day off from work and spend time with our families -- but he's also urging people to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
