USO serves lunch to service members at Atlanta airport

Posted: Updated:

USO volunteers served up lunch to service members passing through Hartsfeld-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday.

Service members enjoyed hot dogs, burgers and other food as they waited for their flights.

For Wilfred Rumingan, the day was a special reminder of his father.

"I miss my dad, and I will always miss my dad for the rest of my life. And Memorial Day will always ring a bell for those people who served,' said Wilfred Rumingan.

His father, Guillermo Rumingan, was a Filipino scout who served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He spent much of his life working successfully to get his fellow scouts the benefits and the recognition they deserved from the U.S. government. He passed away last spring.

"I'm proud of my dad. I know I won't be able to do what he did in his lifetime," said Wilfred Rumingan.

But Wilfred has followed in his father's footsteps. He's been in the army for 21 years and is currently based out of Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.

"I know how it feels to be thinking of those who gave their lives for this country. And I love this country, just like anybody who serves," said Rumingan.

The USO of Georgia says it helps more than 400,000 troops and their family members every year, making it one of the largest USO operations in the world.
