CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -

People gathered at a candlelight ceremony in Cartersville to observe Memorial Day.

The names of service members who paid the ultimate price for our country were read aloud at the service, which was hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of Bartow County.

Danny Pickard's twin brother Richard was killed in Vietnam, not far from where Danny was also fighting.

"I went to visit him before I came here because buried at a local cemetery," Danny Pickard said. "I thanked him for his service and told him I wished we could have spent more time together."

Attendees of the service placed a lit candle at the Bartow County Veterans memorial. Some also donated money to keep the walk of honor going, The wall bears the names of 576 service members from Bartow County dating all the way back to the Revolutionary War.

"It means all the sacrifice that we gave -- all of us," Robert Johnson, a Vietnam veteran.

The wall is sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of Bartow County, but the veterans say they are working to pass the mantle on to the next generation.

Dr. Bob Poston, who became a psychologist after Vietnam, still has shrapnel in his body. He earned a Purple Heart and wants all Americans to remember that freedom is not free.

"I was lucky enough to come home. Many of them didn't. It just means a lot to honor those" said Poston.
