Winds to 60 mph kicked up a sandstorm in the Lancaster area forcing the CHP to close the 14 Freeway near Avenue A during the rush hour Tuesday afternoon.
The California Highway Patrol reports several vehicle crashes as visibility in some areas was reduced to zero.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway were closed about 4:30 p.m., prompting the CHP to declare a SigAlert for the area.
A high-wind warning was issued for the Antelope Valley and the mountains of Ventura County by the Weather Service in Oxnard until 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.
14 freeway reopened tonight, but the winds will be around a good part of the day on Wednesday.
