Water Main Break Floods Hollywood Garage, Crews Working To Repair

Posted: Updated:
Hollywood, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A Department Of Water and Power crew is working this morning to repair a water main after a rupture flooded the underground garage of a three-story apartment building in Hollywood and caused minor damage to two apartments.

The pipe burst at 2212 North Cahuenga Boulevard at around 7:40p.m. last night.

Between 20 and 30 residential buildings lost water service as a result.

From Hal Eisner:

There's a lot to do to fix a leaky pipe! DWP workers have been dealing with one ever since it ruptured around 7:30pm Wednesday night. That's about how long Christine Hawke and other neighbors have been dealing with cleaning up the mess left after the leak sent an enormous amount of water cascading down the street into a couple of apartments and into an underground parking garage.

The pipe, made of cast iron is 82 years old. It was made back in 1931. Mike Miller with DWP says everyday our pipes get older. There are 7200 miles of them in the City of Los Angeles. There are, he says, about 2 and a half leaks a day. This one in the 2200 block of Cahuenga was bigger than most.

Workers think it was about an 8 foot tear. We were able to see the leak in the underbelly of the pipe using our GoPro camera.

It's being replaced with a different type of pipe. It's what they all "ductile iron." This one, they hope, will last 100 years.
