ATLANTA -

Police say they fired shots at a man who brandished a gun during an early-morning fight outside a midtown Atlanta nightclub.  Witnesses say a large fight broke out behind the Sutra Lounge, and eventually they heard shots.

The fight started around 3 a.m. outside the club, which is located at Crescent and 13th streets.  There's no word yet on what started the brawl, or how many people were involved in the altercation.

Atlanta police say the shots heard by witnesses were fired by two off-duty officers after one of the men involved in the fight brandished a gun.  They say that suspect was taken to the hospital and is in surgery.  At last check, he was listed in critical condition.

Police say the two officers who were involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave.  They were working a security detail when the fight broke out, and they tried to break it up.

Surrounding streets were closed for some time as the investigation continues.  They have since reopened.
