Firefighters And First Responders: Thank You

Posted: Updated:

As the Powerhouse Fire continues to burn in the Angeles National Forest northeast of Santa Clarita, there is horrible news out of Houston.

Four firefighters died, thirteen others were injured while fighting a very aggressive fire at the Houston Inn, a motel.

Killed in the line of duty were:

  • Captain EMT Matthew Renaud, 35
  • Engineer Operator EMT Robert Bebee, 41
  • Firefighter EMT Robert Garner, 29
  • Probationary Firefighter Anne Sullivan, 24

The Houston Fire Department has never seen four firefighters pass away from the same incident in the history of their department.

As our LA County Fire Department tweeted today, there simply are "no words" to convey our condolences.

But there are two words that we can say to the brave men and women; firefighters and first responders, when we see them: Thank you.

I spent the morning at the command post for the Powerhouse Fire, watching as firefighters arrived from all over the state. Big Bear, Lake Tahoe, Fullerton, Anaheim, Burbank, just to name a few. The convoys of mutual aid just kept arriving.

But as quickly as they arrived, they left, sent to the frontlines of the fire. And as they rolled out, I tried to snap a picture of their trucks to tweet them a thank you. It's the least I could do.

"Thank you"

Two simple words. Powerful, yet so often left unsaid.

The tragedy in Houston is a sad reminder that life is short; that tomorrow isn't guaranteed to all and that we may never have a chance to say "thank you".

So say, text or tweet your thank you's today.

To strangers, friends, employees. Remind loved ones that they are loved.

While you still can.
