New Baltimore reserve officer killed in off-duty traffic accident

NEW BALTIMORE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A New Baltimore reserve police officer was off-duty riding his motorcycle when a car hit and killed him. Officer Patrick Wisniewski leaves behind a wife and five children.

"My conversation with his wife late last night was at the hospital on bended knee holding her hand," said New Baltimore Police Chief Timothy Wiley.

33-year-old Wisniewski served 15 years in the United States Air Force. He was a staff sergeant at Selfridge and the kind of officer that went above and beyond.

"He has taken every opportunity to be deployed overseas, never once gave it a second thought. In the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings, he came in and volunteered his time even more than what he would be on road patrol, went into those schools every single day just to provide an atmosphere of peace of mind," Wiley said.

Wisniewski's life was tragically cut short Sunday night. He was headed north on his motorcycle on Jefferson at 21 Mile when a 64-year-old man heading south on Jefferson reportedly made a left hand turn in front of the off-duty officer. Chesterfield Township police say Wisniewski was wearing a helmet, but it wasn't enough to save his life.

The tragedy comes just as the officer was to receive a promotion.

"We were looking to hire him full-time in just a few short months," Wiley said.

The driver is recovering in the hospital. Police say he was driving on a suspended license. Officers have not released his name, but say criminal charges are pending.

In the meantime, the flag flies a half staff, and brothers and sisters in blue are donning mourning badges in honor of their fallen hero.

"My heart goes out to his family and to his children," Wiley said. "They need to know that they've got a whole new extended family of aunts and uncles and brothers and sisters here at the police department."

Michigan's Thin Blue Line has set up an account for the Wisniewski family. You can make a donation at any PNC Bank location or the New Baltimore Police Department, located at 37885 Green Street.
