What a Throw! Puig Mania Has Begun

Posted: Updated:

It was a storybook ending.  Yasiel Puig the Cuban defector and Dodger phenom rocketed in a ball in from right field to first base for an out to cement the Dodgers win against the Padres. He went 2 for 4 in his debut, just over 37 thousand fans saw it live at Dodger stadium  and social media sent it trending worldwide on twitter.

And with that,  Puig-mania has begun.   Just check out EBAY where an unused ticket to his debut game is up for bids starting at $4.99.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yasiel-Puig-Debut-Rookie-Los-Angeles-Dodgers-Season-Ticket-UNUSED-MINT-CONDITION-/151057623244.  Puig went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and that memorable defensive play that brought fans to their feet at Dodger stadium and in their living rooms.  Here is some twitter reaction:   nathan m.pu@ws5588dod  amazing display of talent #puig!!!!!!!!!! cant get enough of this kid,

Krystal Rivas@krystalcsusb  Puig's arm is a cannon! Hopefully the dodgers can keep this one healthy! #dodgers #puig #thinkblue, Michelle@Visco7 Amazing! The games been over about 45 min and were still talking about the Cuban Canon #Puig! There's joy in Dodger Nation tonight!

The Puig excitement began building the moment the Dodgers announced they were calling him up

How excited were the Dodgers about their top prospect starting in centerfield for the Padres series?  They tweeted out a picture of him walking into Dodger stadium for the first time.

@Dodgers"Yasiel Puig has arrived at Dodger Stadium, welcome to the big leagues!"  pic.twitter.com/JdzMIl7fNb

He got so much media attention for his debut one reporter said, "It's like watching Tiger walk up to the clubhouse."     Puig defected from Cuba just a year ago, and the Dodgers signed the little known ball player to a sensational $42million contract last summer.   He became the superstar of spring training in Arizona with a .517 batting average.  Sports writers trumpeted his abilities to hit with power, run the bases, and play the field comparing him with some of baseball's all-time greats.     When fans heard Puig was making his debut at Dodger stadium,  fans took to twitter with their excitement,   one tweet from as far away as England:     " Rory Burnand@rmjb08 2 Jun @truebluela is the #Puig debut worth staying up for as a Dodger fan from England? The home games start at 3.30am over here!"

In batting practice the Dodgers hitting coach Mark McQwire embraced Puig in a big bear hug, the Dodgers tweeted out this picture and caption:

"A big hug from Big Mac" https://twitter.com/Dodgers/status/341697157914578944/photo/1

And at the plate during batting practice , the slugger made it look like he deserves all the hype,  he hit one missile after another,  https://vine.co/v/b3XLPqeIdnu .

Bernie Pleskoff  of  MLB.com writes, "Yasiel Puig is one of three Cuban players that will each have a major impact on the game. Along with Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes and the Cubs' Jorge Soler, Puig represents powerful and polished products of Cuban baseball."Each has star qualities."   Puig came up to themajors because of the rash of Dodger injuries, and he added the spark, at least for the night that the Dodgers have been needing.
