Paramedics push patient to ER after ambulance breaks down

Posted: Updated:
POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. -

A pair of local paramedics went the extra mile for a patient in need after their ambulance broke down.

After Manny Piri suffered a heart attack, Vicki Borgia and Chris Gudaitis knew they had to get the 49-year-old man to the hospital quickly.

The ambulance, however, would not cooperate. It stalled about 300 yards from the hospital's entrance. Another ambulance was several miles away, but Vicki and Chris knew that every second mattered.

"We both at the same time spontaneously said we need to just pull him," said Vicki Borgia.

"They jumped out of the ambulance and, with the help of a student-paramedic who was with them, pushed the patient up the hill to the emergency room.

"I was hoping we were just going to make it up the hill. It's a pretty steep hill,"said Vicki Borgia.

Between the weight of the patient, the gurney, and their equipment, they were pushing about 450 pounds uphill.

"It was a hot day. The pavement's hot. You're already worried that your patient is going to go into arrest on you. So you've got a lot of things weighing on you besides the weight of the stretcher," Vicki said.

It wasn't easy, but they made it – and in doing so, they saved Piri's life.

"Right in the nick of time, because about two to minutes after we got him to the hospital bed, he was going into cardiac arrest," said Gudaitis.

Chris and Vicki met with Piri once he was released from the hospital five days later.

"He said he felt like God sent him angels that day to take care of him and very glad that it turned out that way," said Vicki.

At the time of the experience, Chris Gudaitis had only been a paramedic for three weeks.
