Storm-damaged R subway tunnel closing for repairs

Posted: Updated:

A subway tunnel used by the R train that was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy will be closed for long-term repairs beginning Friday night.

Work on the Montague tube is expected to last 12 to 14 months.

The closure will affect tens of thousands of riders between Manhattan and southern Brooklyn.

  • On weekdays, the R will operate in two sections: one in Brooklyn only and the other in Queens and Manhattan.
  • On weekends, the R will operate via the Manhattan Bridge; no weekend or late-night service at Jay St.-MetroTech, Court St., Whitehall St., Rector St., Cortlandt St., and City Hall.

Salt from storm surges heavily damaged electronic components in the tunnels and is still causing corrosion.

The MTA also plans to close a tunnel used by the G train between Brooklyn and Queens for 12 weekends this year.

The closure begins at 11:30 p.m. on Friday.
