Fine for littering could increase to $1,500 in Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new proposal introduced at Chicago's City Council meeting Wednesday looks to crackdown on littering with a pretty hefty fine - $1,500.

Tossing trash out the window of your vehicle could possibly become a lot more expensive.

The proposal would increase the littering fine to $1,500 from the current $50-$200 fine.

If the person who threw the trash out the window is older than 16, the car would also be impounded.

Alderman Howard Brookins is sponsoring the measure.

"I don't want the money from people. I want people to stop the behavior," Brookins said. "I want them to stop pulling up to a stop sign or traffic light, and emptying their car of bags of garbage."

Before becoming an ordinance, the proposal will have to gain the votes of City Council and undergo a hearing by committee.
