National Doughnut Day - Tony McEwing's Take

Posted: Updated:

So what's your favorite doughnut? Glazed? Chocolate? With or without sprinkles? You may have heard by now that today is National Doughnut Day.

Sometimes I think national food days were created just to allow most of us to indulge in some calorie-laden dish without feeling guilty or as a marketing tool to promote the consumption of a particular product to promote sales. Honestly, I prefer not to over analyze it. Instead I choose to just takes these days at face value and enjoy them for what they are.

That being said, I've already engorged myself with a few delectable doughnut delights. And I don't feel the least bit guilty about it. If that changes later in the day, I'll just do an extra fifteen minutes of cardio. In honor of National Doughnut Day, a lot of bakeries are offering specials or even free doughnuts. And Dunkin Donuts is using the occasion to debut its new glazed doughnut breakfast sandwich. Weighing in at 360 calories, it features a fried egg and bacon between two halves of a classic glazed doughnut.

Doesn't sound all that appetizing to me but to each his own. Dunkin by the way is giving away doughnuts with the purchase of a beverage. Krispy Kreme on the other hand is offering free treats no purchase necessary.

So go ahead. Splurge if you're so inclined and don't have any medical issues that prevent you from partaking. Despite what some fitness fanatics might tell you, there are far worse things in life than getting a little sugar fix.

An NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired. The police department asked its Twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others decided to not "play nice, " sharing beating photos and more.

"Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
