A look back at the June 7, 2008 tornado outbreak

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday June 7,2008, supercell thunderstorms developed across northeast Illinois and produced 8 tornadoes ranging from EF0 to EF2.

Two EF0 tornadoes touched down, one in Livingston County and the other in southern Cook County. Four EF2 tornadoes touched down in Will County, with one traveling into southern Cook County. That tornado was the first strong or violent (EF2 or greater) tornado to hit Cook County since March 27, 1991, when an EF3 tornado occurred in Lemont.

The EF2 tornado in Cook County on this day was the 17thstrong or violent tornado to hit the county since 1950. There were three confirmed tornadoes to touch down in Cook County on this day, making it only the second time since 1950 that three tornadoes occurred in Cook County from a single outbreak. The only other time this occurred was back on June 9th 1966 when 2F2 and 1 F0 tornado touched down in northern Cook County. Despite many reports of damage, there were no serious injuries.

This is just a reminder that we need to be storm ready and to always have a plan. This will happen again. It's just a matter of when and where.
