Playoff beards aplenty as Hawks fans gear up for Stanley Cup

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If you've noticed the men of Chicago looking a little shaggier lately, it could be more a show of support than an aversion to the razor.

Some fans have already been growing out their playoff beards for a month, while others are about to jump on the Blackhawks bearded bandwagon.

Believe it or not, "playoff beard" has a Wikipedia entry explaining the hockey superstition of not shaving during the playoffs, which started with the New York Islanders in the 1980's.

It's one thing for a hockey player to go ZZ Top or Grizzly Adams, but quite another for a guy in corporate America.

Matt Talbert works at a company called Corporate Translations in Buckgown. As an avid Blackhawks fan, his family worried that growing a playoff beard could cost him his job.

"Knowing that I would take some heat not from my co-workers and supervisors, but some family members, I verbally asked my supervisor to construct a letter on company letterhead saying it's okay," Talbert explains.

Matt's boss, Shawn McKnown, was happy to oblige and sent Matt a letter telling him it's okay to grow a beard.

The letter read: "This is to confirm that your proposed growing of a beard during the NHL playoffs is both acceptable to and encouraged by Corporate Translations, although as a native Michigander my personal preference would be for the Wings to defeat the Blackhawks."
