LA Kings coach Darryl Sutter says some people in LA expect too much, "you can't win the Stanley Cup every year." He was responding to reporter's questions about why the Kings fell short of making it to the Stanley Cup finals.
LA is a town that wants winners. When the Lakers started the season losing 4 out of 5 games, Mike Brown was fired. The Clippers lost 4 games in a row in the playoffs against the Grizzles and Vinny Del Negro was let go. But Darryl Sutter took his team to the Western Conference finals and he's already working on next season and says, "There are some awful spoiled people in the media and awful spoiled people in this organization…"
After a goal in the final 9.4 seconds of regulation that took the Kings and Blackhawks to double overtime, the Kings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. They went farther into the playoffs than any of the last three Stanley Cup winners and Sutter says they had a very good season. Sutter says the team had a good season and as for where they fell short? The Blackhawks looked quicker but Sutter says there's only one issue, "Chicago was a healthy team going into this round."
The Kings players were banged up; Robyn Regehr played with a bad arm and had surgery Monday, team captain Dustin Brown played with a torn ligament in his knee, Drew Doughty had a bad ankle, Justin Williams had a separated shoulder. Jarret Stoll and Mike Richards had concussions.
Brown says he probably wouldn't have played in the regular season with his injury but he felt he could help the team during the playoffs. He says he had trouble pushing off his leg. Brown said it happened on his first 5-on-5 shift against the San Jose Sharks in Game 6 of the conference semifinals. "I hit [Dan] Boyle," Brown said. "It's a nothing play. I saw it on video. I continued to play the shift. I knew something was wrong, but I kept on playing. He was coming around the net and corner and [Trevor Lewis] kind of had him angled, and I kind of came down on an angle. I think my knee just kind of hit his thigh. He's a little smaller than me, so it's just the way it hit." He says he won't watch the Stanley Cup finals between the Blackhawks and the Bruins. He may have it on his TV as background noise, but he won't sit down and watch it, "it's too hard."
Sutter says once everyone's healthy, there's only one issue he's dealing with, "We're a really young team and we can get better."
