Sarah Murnaghan Has New Lungs

PHILADELPHIA -

10 year old Sarah Murnaghan has new lungs tonight.

The little girl who has captured the hearts of people around the world is now in recovery after a six hour surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Her family says it couldn't have gone any better.

"Wow! What a night!"

A celebration at CHOP for Sarah Murnaghan, the 10 year old with a new lease on life.

According to Sharon Ruddock, Sarah's aunt, "The surgery was very very successful; it was flawless; it was perfectly executed..."

The life saving call came at 10:30 last night. The little girl from Newtown Square suffering from Cystic Fibrosis fueled the debate over transplant rules for children. Tonight she is breathing with 2 new lungs.

"It was a beautiful set of lungs that they went in really well. they were able to resize them and they fit in her chest cavity almost perfectly," exclaimed Sharon.

Sarah had become so sick that she had to be put into a medically induced coma. This was shortly after a court ruling moved her to top of the transplant list and allowed Sarah to receive an adult lung transplant.

According to Sarah's mother Janet Murnaghan,"Just a blessing from God. I feel like it came at the last minute and we wouldn't have made it much longer."

Sarah's new lungs came from an unknown donor somewhere in the region. Sarah's family may never know where they came from.

"That family has given Sarah a chance of life and a chance at a future she wouldn't have had. We are quite certain we were down to the last week," says Sharon.

Now after 18 months of waiting for new organs. The next challenge for Sarah: recovery.

"If everything goes perfectly she can be out in a couple weeks...yeah...running down the hall."
