DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. -

The family of a Dawson County teenager who died in an accident on Monday disputes the police claim that she was car surfing.

The Georgia State Patrol says 16-year-old Anna Hawkins was killed Monday night when she attempted to car surf from the roof of her friend's vehicle in Dawsonville. They say the small SUV hit an embankment and threw Anna to the ground.

Anna's aunt, Lynn Burn, read a statement from the teen's mother saying, "Witnesses at the scene indicate there was no one outside the vehicle in the moments before the crash."

Burn said that the family spoke to a resident who lives near the crash site. That resident said the SUV Anna was in passed by his home twice.

"He is stating that when he saw the car going to and fro like that that he did not see any physical person on the top of the car or on the hood of the car," Burn said.

Burn believes that Anna was ejected out the car door. However, she admits there is no indication the neighbor witnessed the crash that killed Anna. She says the family is talking to investigators to shed more light on the case.

The GSP says they'll confer with the district attorney's office to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the teen girl driver.

Anna's aunt says whatever comes to light, she hopes others teens stay away from car surfing.

"Talk to your children. Let them see videos of car surfing and explain to them how dangerous it is," said Burn.

Anna Hawkins' funeral is scheduled for Friday in Marietta.
