Flag Day

The nation commemorates the adoption of the American flag on June 14. The Stars and Stripes, a symbol of American pride, were officially introduced in 1777.

The flag which consists of 13 horizontal stripes alternating red and white and in the canton, 50 white stars are on a blue field is loaded with symbolism.

The red stands for hardiness and valor; the white, purity and the blue vigilance and justice.

"The flags (predecessors to the current flag) existed way back when the colonies were here. So many of them existed before the national flag came into existence,"  said Lt. Col. Dwight Webster

The 'Betsy Ross' flag was the first flag adopted when there were 13 colonies. There were 13 stars on the flag. As more states were added to the Union, more stars were added.

"(The flag) stands for the freedom and liberty of our country," said Lt. Col. Webster.

The flag, considered a "living symbol," should be folded a certain way:

1. Straighten out flag to full length and fold lengthwise.

2. Fold it lengthwise a second time to meet the open edge, making sure that the union of the stars on the blue field remains outward in full view.

3. A triangular fold is then started by bringing the striped corner of the folded edge to the open edge.

4. The outer point is then turned inward, parallel with the open edge, to form a second triangle.

5. The diagonal or triangular folding is continued toward the blue union until the end is reached, with only the blue showing and the form being that of a cocked hat.

The future is here when it comes to vehicles. The auto industry has packed nearly 1,000 automobiles into the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side for the 2014 NY Auto Show.   Among the 'must-sees' is a hydrogen-powered vehicle and a prototype with cameras that allow you to see the ground underneath as you drive over it.

“I was supposed to be dead before last Easter," said Valerie Harper about her diagnosis of cancer in the lining around her brain.  Harper's indomitable spirit and the support from fans of her character 'Rhoda' in the 1970s hit series 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' has kept her going. "It’s a tasty headline," said Harper about the magazine where the inaccurate report was made.
