Delivered Goods To Your Home: The Small Business Angle

Thinking about the interview I did with two women who, in the last year, started their own businesses delivering gourmet donuts and organic raw juice (respectively) to customers at home.

This is the week Amazon.com begins home grocery delivery in Los Angeles and yet these two entrepreneurs beat the biggest retailer in the world to the punch. Both Janeen Gudelj and Kathleen Bywater found their passion and didn't ask why their new businesses wouldn't work. They just did it.

Janeen's Donut Snob and Kathleen's Revive Juicery found customers who both wanted their products and saw that they were worth having delivered, like the milk man or Helms Bakery from the 1960's. Both businesses have exploded.

That reveals a few things for me to see...

People appreciate the personal touch of feeling like they know the businesses they buy from. We live in such a crowded place with such high gas prices and such little available time that home delivery once again makes sense. But the most revealing thing for me is to remember that when we get an idea... feel a passion... we should follow it with exuberance. I tend to look for what can go wrong-- what has already been done. I wonder how many good ideas that thinking has quenched. Here's to free thinking and new ideas.
