Murder Suspect Surrenders After Standoff With Police

Northridge, CA -

Northridge - By all accounts, you could hear the screaming for blocks.

The normally quiet Northridge neighborhood was pierced Thursday night by the angry and loud voices of a man and a woman arguing on Kenya Street.

They heard the screams on Ludlow, on Baton Rouge, on Kenya Place. "It was echoing through the neighborhood", said one man. "You could hear the 'f' word a lot. And the rage."

By the time police were called, it was too late. The fight had ended...with a gunshot. Or was it three?

The victim's lifeless body found on a neighbor's lawn. While inside her home, the man thought to be her boyfriend, and according to police her killer, refused to come out.

Five very long hours and another gunshot later he finally walked out; naked and bloodied. It was over.

Police think he shot himself in the face after he killed his girlfriend.

Neighbors tell me she has grown kids and a few grandchildren who just yesterday they heard playing in her pool. "Look grandma, look at me", a neighbor recalled hearing.

Today, she is gone and he's in the hospital undergoing surgery to get the bullet out of his face. And from there, police say, he'll most likely be going to jail.

"Why?", a neighbor asked me, not really expecting an answer. "What could have been so bad that they had to kill her?"

Why?

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
