Morning storms soak metro area, lightning strikes

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A line of strong thunderstorms moving through a large part of north Georgia left scattered power outages early Monday morning.

Georgia Power reported before dawn Monday that fewer than 1,500 customers statewide were without power as the storms continued to push south of metro Atlanta.

Some of the heaviest overnight rains hit Atlanta's northern suburbs.

The National Weather Service reported that thunderstorms would be possible early this week across Georgia as upper-level disturbances combine with a moist and unstable environment.  Forecasters say the main hazards will be gusty winds, frequent lightning and heavy rain.

This latest round of rainy weather comes just as many homeowners -- particularly, those in hard-hit parts of Cobb County and Sandy springs -- are still clearing away hefty debris from last week's storms.

More reports of trees down are coming in from across metro Atlanta early Monday -- including, once again, Sandy Springs. On Dunwoody Club Drive at Saddle Ridge Drive, downed trees have made the roadway impassable. Commuters are strongly advised to avoid the area while crews work to clear away the debris.

Over in Kennesaw, a large tree came crashing down onto a nearby home overnight. The homeowner there says the tree smashed through two bedrooms, making the home unlivable for the time being. Thankfully, she said no one inside of the home was hurt.

"Everybody is very shook up, but everybody is physically okay. The house is not habitable. Power and gas have been turned off. I'm just very thankful everybody is okay," she said.

In Cobb County, emergency personnel stayed busy overnight once again responding to a number of house fires caused by lightning strikes. Lightning sparked at least five fires.
