Echo Park: Open to the Public Once Again

Los Angeles, CA -

Hundreds of Angelinos showed up to the grand re-opening of Echo Park. For the past two years, the park's been a construction zone, the city was cleaning up Echo Park Lake, planting new flowers and grass and laying down new walkways.

Echo park was closed because of many problems, the biggest was the dirty, bacteria-filled water in the lake.

"There would be rainy days here and pollution would get washed from our streets. Sometimes our sewers would over flow and go straight into our storm drains," said L.A.'s Mayor Elect Eric Garcetti.

The park's renovation cost $45 million and now locals and visitors alike can enjoy the park that's been restored to its original glory, including the lady of the lake statue that's back where it stood in the 1930s.

"Its beautiful we've been waiting for a long time.  I've lived in the area for about 5 and a half years so today's pretty cool they did a really great job," said Scott Dressler.

One of the final steps in the renovation will be taking down the fence that surrounds Echo Park and that will happen Monday.

While the park is visually beautiful, some are still worried about safety.  Before the renovation there were issues with crime, graffiti and people sleeping at the park.  At this point its unclear how the city plans to will deal with those problems if they arise again.
