FOX 29 Gets Results: Pool Safety

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

FOX 29, looking out for the safety of your kids with hot weather and swimming pool season soon to arrive.

When FOX 29 came to the Monkiewicz Recreation Center on an unrelated newstip, we noticed a pair of temporary kiddie pools had been set up outside.

They were soft sided, 18 inches tall, full of water, and easily reached from the playground. In addition, they were unattended for much of the time we were there.

Any small child could have fallen in and drowned.

When we pointed out the potential danger to the folks who run a daycamp for young children at the rec center, they quickly emptied the pools.

We alerted the city's recreation commissioner to the situation.

Instructions on the box the pools came in, say clearly that adults are to "closely watch children who are in or near this pool."

The big swimming pool at Monkiewicz has been closed for the past four years.

Plans are in the works to build a spray park at this site, but that's probably two years away.
