Rikers officers accused of pot dealing

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Two New York City correction officers are charged with dealing marijuana at Rikers Island.

 Austin Romain and Khalif Phillips were arrested and are accused of smuggling marijuana and scalpels into maximum security facilities and selling them to inmates.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says the pair also smuggled scalpels into two different maximum security Rikers Island prison and sold them to inmates.

The pair is accused of arranging payment through an evasive money wiring system the officers oversaw outside the jail.

Romain has worked as a correction officer since August 2007.  Phillips has worked as a correction officer since February 2006.  Both are from Brooklyn.

Investigators say the two officers were not working together but were caught during the same investigation.

The pair fair conspiracy and drug charges.  They each face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

There have been 30 contraband arrests involving correction employees according to DOI Commissioner Rose Gill Hearn.
