Old School Experience, New School Tech

Posted: Updated:

The news has been everywhere... people walk into stores to sample hardware but buy online. They'll walk into a Best Buy or Staples, maybe a Sears and check out a laptop, smartphone or HDTV then go look for the best price at their favorite e-tailer. But is the trend really that strong? Ever walk into a Best Buy on the weekend to check out the smartphones? In many densely populated areas, you'll be waiting awhile for service and Samsung is betting big on that foot traffic.

On the strength of increasing device popularity and market share, Samsung is beating the streets and not just leaving it up to carriers to be its connection with the buying public. By summer's end, the South Korean consumer electronics giant will have opened 1,500 "pop-up shops" inside of Best Buy locations across the nation. Their Galaxy S4 has moved over 10 million units, their Galaxy Note and Note2 -though scoffed at by tech bloggers- have exceeded expectations and they're making tablets in enough sizes to cover both ham fisted users and those with pixie-size palms alike. Only time will tell if they're spreading themselves too thin. At the time of this writing, though they're sales and market share are very strong, their sheer volume of devices and tighter margins keeps them from enjoying the kind of market cap that keeps Apple, their main competitor, at the head of the class.
