Johns Creek mayor under investigation

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -

A metro Atlanta mayor is under investigation by his city council. Johns Creek City Council members voted unanimously Monday to hire an attorney to investigate Mayor Mike Bodker.

The Council accuses the mayor of opposing its will.

A dilapidated truss bridge has been the subject of controversy amongst Johns Creek city leaders.

Bodker thought it was a good idea to restore Rogers Bridge as a pedestrian and bike crossing over the Chattahoochee River.

"To have a balanced quality of life in a city, it takes more than just working on the roads. You have to be able to walk places. You have to have green space," Bodker said.

The mayor says he agrees with the Council decision to vote down the project in favor road surfacing, but he thinks the city shouldn't completely rule out restoring the bridge someday.

"We're all clear on what the city's position on this is. That doesn't mean that forever we can't talk about it," Bodker said.

After Bodker suggested that a new council member attend a meeting on Rogers Bridge, the mayor says the council reprimanded him and voted unanimously to hire an attorney to investigate him.

"In this instance, obviously, we're trying to figure out if the mayor has apparently violated any parts of the city charter or any of their city policies or any state or federal laws," said attorney Bob Wilson.

Wilson admits that it's too early to say if the mayor did anything wrong, but in a statement, Councilmember Randall Johnson said, "…there have been allegations that he's repeatedly involved himself in actions and situations that were outside the will of Council."

Without specifics, the mayor is left to wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that he's up for re-election.

"One could think that potentially, it has something to do with the election. I hope not," Bodker said.

The Rogers Bridge restoration project originally involved Duluth, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Johns Creek inherited it when it became incorporated seven years ago.
