Alpharetta PD seizes 188 lbs. of marijuana, worth $850K

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -

Alpharetta police seized 188 pounds of marijuana from an unoccupied home on Waters Run Drive, authorities announced Wednesday.

Alpharetta police had been sent to the home after a 911 call indicated the residence had an open garage door. Alpharetta officers responded and determined the residence was left open, but they were uncertain if anyone was at the home.

While checking the premises, Alpharetta police discovered a large professional grow operation involving marijuana. Based upon the visual observations, police obtained a search warrant to enter the premise and begin the investigation.

Upon searching the residence, it was observed to have been structurally altered, police said. There was no furniture on the main level. Holes had been created through three floors of hardwood flooring and up to the ceiling areas. Large industrial ductwork had been created to travel from the basement to the top floor level. Foaming insulation material had been placed against the walls. Elaborate electrical and watering systems had been installed.

It appeared electrical power was being stolen as it bypassed the residential meter. Numerous marijuana plants were discovered in various growth stages in many rooms. The marijuana plants received artificial lighting from dozens of large refractor lamps.

As detectives assigned to the Alpharetta DPS Special Intelligence Unit completed their search and investigation, more than 250 marijuana plants in various stages of growth were confiscated. The seizure was in excess of 188 pounds with a street value of $850,000.

All evidence was confiscated and transported to the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety.  The investigation revealed this was a rental residence and the owner had no knowledge of the criminal activity.

Detectives have identified a person of interest and the investigation continues.
