Tucson names Texas educator as new superintendent

Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Tucson Unified School District has selected a new next superintendent.

The district's governing board voted 4-1 Tuesday to appoint Heliodoro Torres Sanchez to lead Tucson schools after John Pedicone announced his resignation in March.

Sanchez currently is interim superintendent of Ector County Independent School District in Odessa, Texas.

He takes over a school district under fire nationally for a banning its Mexican American Studies curriculum. During a recent public forum, the 38-year-old Sanchez said he was concerned about students "being indoctrinated."

Sanchez's Tucson employment contract has not yet been finalized and will come before the board later for approval.
