Baby dies after being born with fatal defect

ATLANTA -

A Fayetteville couple is coping with the loss of their baby, who died after being born without a brain.

Lauren and Nick Bishop have faith in God and each other to get them through one of the toughest days in their lives.

"There's two things in my life that Ethan has brought me closer to, that's the Bible and my wife," said Nick Bishop, a Peachtree City firefighter.

Their son, Ethan, was delivered by C-section at Piedmont Newnan Hospital on Wednesday.  The joy of Ethan's birth was clouded by a defect the baby has called anencephaly, which means Ethan doesn't have a brain and won't survive.

"Is there such a thing as coping when you have to bury a child," said Lauren Bishop.

There were glimmers of hope.

"Last night, I got to fall asleep feeling my son move in my wife's stomach," said Nick. "I couldn't think of anything better to fall asleep to."

But that hope was dashed by the reality of the condition.

"Everything that is in the brain that tells everything to work is missing, including feeling pain," said Lauren Bishop.  "Most are born blind and deaf."

The deadly diagnosis has been tough for older brother Leo and 2-year-old sister Ryan too.)

Lauren said her prayer was to hold little Ethan alive, even if it was momentarily.  As reality set in, she's also planned a funeral for this Saturday.

"Because of the age of the baby and some circumstances with the casket we chose, we have to bury fast and it would have to be a closed casket," said Lauren Bishop.  "So, there will be no healing for me, if Ethan goes today or tomorrow."

The Bishops say the metro Atlanta community has been more than kind. Burial items and thousands of dollars have been donated during the difficult time.

Baby Ethan was born at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday and survived 21 minutes.
