Property tax hike approved in Gwinnett County

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Taxes are going up in Georgia's most populated county. The Gwinnett County School Board voted unanimously to raise the millage rate.

School officials said the tax hike is necessary to pay debts and help teachers. They say they can no longer tap the system's financial reserves to help pay long-term debt.

The increase adds just over $100 to the tax bill on a $200,000 house.

Additionally, the tax proceeds will be used to eliminate furlough days for teachers, who had to take two unpaid during the last school year.

School system spokesman Jorge Quintana says Gwinnett teachers have gone without pay raises for five years.

Gwinnett also plans to add 18 school police officers, which would almost double the number of officers in the Gwinnett system. Parents said they wanted more officers in direct response to last December's school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Quintana said.

Most residents who talked to FOX 5 on Thursday said they supported the increase.

The Gwinnett system had about 165,000 students this past school year and a couple more thousand are expected next year.

It's the first property tax hike from the Gwinnett school system in eight years.
