ATLANTA -

The mother of a man shot by Atlanta police on Wednesday says there's no way her son could have held a gun to the officer's neck.

APD supervisors say officers shot Johnny Cleckley after he allegedly pulled a gun on them near Lenox Square.

Police said they stopped to check Cleckley after they received calls about a theft suspect.  Authorities said an officer shot Cleckley after he allegedly pointed a weapon at the officer's head.

Cleckley was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

Johnny Cleckley's mother, Karen, said that she disputes the police version of events.

"I don't see how that's possible. How can he get close enough to a police to have the gun at his neck. There's too many loose ends," said Karen Cleckley.

Cleckley said her son, who always rode a bike, would have run away and not confront a police officer with a gun. She admitted that Johnny had a deeply troubled past that included run ins with the criminal justice system.

"He was doing carjacking stuff and he did 13 years, he is a mental health patient too and longstanding so he had been trying to work toward building his life up with the family," said Karen Cleckley.

According to police, the man is also facing other serious charges. Authorities are not revealing many details about the incident, as they are still investigating the shooting.
