Long Island College Hospital ER stops receiving ambulances

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Ambulances are no longer bringing patients to the emergency room of Long Island College Hospital in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Nurses said SUNY Downstate plans to close LICH.

A spokesman for SUNY Downstate said LICH loses $4 million a month and that medical staff are leaving for other hospitals.

"Our primary concern is always patient care and safety, and our chief medical officer has determined that, given the exodus of doctors and other medical staff from LICH, continuing to send emergency patients there is no longer in the patients' best interest," said Robert Bellafiore, a SUNY Downstate spokesman.

LICH services many patients from Red Hook to Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Some worry that SUNY plans to close LICH and turn the site into condos, which is what happened to St. Vincent's Hospital in Greenwich Village.

The SUNY Downstate spokesman insisted that this not the plan for LICH.

Then hospital's staff said it will fight to prevent a condo future.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
