AfterWork Theater Project: 'Rent'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's a new production of old-time favorite "Rent," and Fox 5 was invited to an impromptu rehearsal.

This version has an unlikely cast: a teacher, real estate agent, a pharmaceutical scientist and others. In fact, this production is architectural designer Jo Walker's first time ever on stage.

Jo and the rest of the cast are part of the AfterWork Theater Project, now in its second season. As its name suggests, it is comprised mostly of professionals with day jobs.

"While we put on a really quality show  that's not our focus, our focus is making sure our participants are really getting enriching, fun community experience out of the process," said Evan Greenberg, the founder of the AfterWork Theater Project.

There are no auditions for these productions. Anyone can join and be on stage, although there is a sliding tuition fee. It averages about $495 a person. Despite the cost, it seems a growing number of amateur actors are willing to pay for the chance to be in the spotlight.

"You kind of have to audition for everything in New York, which puts it out of the realm for people like me," said Jo, who has three small roles in "Rent." "The idea you can find a way in, even if it's just a tiny part in an ensemble is fantastic."

AfterWork Theater Project's production of "Rent" premieres Saturday night.
