Sarah Murnaghan Awake, Nodding After Lung Transplant

PHILADELPHIA -

Big improvements are being reported for the Delaware County girl recovering from a lung transplant after a fight to get on the adult organ list.

Janet Murnaghan, the mother of 10-year-old Sarah, said Friday night her daughter has awakened from a medically-induced coma and is responding to simple questions.

Two days earlier, the Newtown Square girl suffering from cystic fibrosis was moved from a heavy-duty breathing machine to a traditional ventilator.

Last week, Sarah received a pair of adult lungs during a six-hour surgery thanks to a judge's order that allowed her on the adult waiting list despite being under the age of 12.

Friday night on Facebook, her mom said Sarah is nodding yes and no to questions, but that she is still intubated and frustrated that she can't talk.

A spokeswoman says Sarah's family is optimistic with the latest progress.
