Billy Crystal helps raise $1million for Long Beach

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Actor and Long Beach native Billy Crystal has helped raise $1 million to rebuild the beach town that was hard-hit by Superstorm Sandy.

Crystal along with the Long Beach City Council announced the gift to the city of Long Beach on Saturday standing on a newly installed section of Long Beach's iconic boardwalk.

Newsday reports $112,000 of the donation will come from Crystal's family and the other $888,000 is coming from money he helped to raise at the annual Celebrity Fight Night fundraiser in March.

The Celebrity Fight Night event raises money for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute and other charities.

Crystal, who grew up on East Park Avenue and attended Long Beach High School, made the announcement before hundreds of beachgoers.

Officials hope the new $44 million boardwalk will be 20 percent constructed by mid-July.
