Funeral set for Pontiac man allegedly killed during fight over television

PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

Clotis Timmons said she is simply heartbroken over the death of her neighbor and friend, 57-year-old Robert Brantley. He was found dead at the Phoenix Place Apartments, an affordable housing project run by the state, where he lived with his nephew.

"I'm so hurt I could cry and cry and cry," Timmons said.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department said around 1:00 a.m. Monday, Brantley and his 45-year-old nephew got into a fight. It escalated and got physical.

"Ultimately with the nephew chocking his uncle, not just across the throat, but also pinching his nose, to death," said Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Deputies and an ambulance rushed to the scene, but nothing could be done for the 57-year-old, who was described as clean and neat, someone who helped others and read the Bible day and night.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, they said the suspect was performing CPR on his uncle, but it did not work. They said it appears the men were arguing over the TV, something so insignificant, and things got out of control.

"People need to step back and realize those things aren't that important in the scheme of things," Bouchard said.

Family members are making funeral arrangements while the 45-year-old nephew remains in custody awaiting arraignment on murder charges, which could land him in prison for life.

A funeral service for Mr. Brantley will take place Friday, July 5 at Cobb-Swanson Funeral Home in Pontiac. It's located at 151 Orchard Lake Road.

Donations can mailed or dropped off to Cobb-Swanson any time before July 5. Contributions should be directed to the "Robert Brantley Memorial Fund."
