Hundreds turn out at airport jobs fair

ATLANTA -

More than 800 people turned out for a shot at 200 jobs in the food service industry at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Tuesday.

The jobs are for three restaurants, including a locally owned Chick-Fil-A, will open in Concourse A late next month and will be contracted by Hojeij Branded Foods.

Hojeij Director of Learning and Development Stephanie Fischer says the positions that will be offered include everything from shift supervisors to cashiers and bartenders. She says they're still hiring some management, but the jobs are mostly hourly positions starting at $7.50 to $8.00 an hour and up.

In addition to being suited for the hospitality industry, applicants must also pass a homeland security background check since they'll work at the airport.

Some applicants bank on their work history, while others hope their personality and positive attitude will help them make the cut.

"I'm a people person. So, I talk to people," said applicant Vincent Bigby. "I love talking to people. So, I have no problem. I always greet people with a smile, and I always say please and thank you."

U.S. Army Spc. Mariah Massey is hoping her military experience will give her an edge.

"I have a security clearance and served in the military, that's 1 percent of the population. So, I'm hoping that'll help me push up to 200, or the top 200." said Massey.

Organizers of the job fair say about 600 people came out for the job fair on Monday. After some coverage in the local media, that number jumped to between 800 and 1,000 applicants on Tuesday.
